COMMON QUESTIONS
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a medication originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes. However, it has also been found to be effective in promoting weight loss. It works by mimicking the action of a hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. Ozempic helps reduce food intake and increases feelings of fullness, leading to weight loss.
Note that the FDA has black-box warnings for semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide. In rodents, all of these medications have been associated with an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors including medullary thyroid cancer (MTC).
Do not use any of these medications if you have a personal or family history of MTC or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2), or an endocrine tumor syndrome that can involve the adrenal, parathyroid gland and thyroid glands.

Yes, Ozempic received FDA approval for weight management in 2020. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve weight control in adults with obesity or those who are overweight and have at least one weight-related medical condition.
Ozempic is typically prescribed to adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (considered obese) or those with a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Your healthcare provider will determine if it’s a suitable option for you based on your individual health and medical history.
